Are you interested in learning to kayak?

On March 18 and 19, instructors from the American Canoe Association (ACA) will be offering an adaptive paddling workshop in kayaking in Dallas, TX, in cooperation with the Red River Division of the ACA and Kayak Power.Com.

This is an opportunity for individuals who have significant mobility impairments to receive instruction in sea kayaking from expert instructors.  You will learn how to compensate for function lost due to your disability, how to adapt the boat and paddle to best suit your needs, and you will complete the ACA Introduction to Paddling course.

This course includes paddling instruction in a pool session and paddling on calm water with your instructors.  Paddling is a great sport to enjoy with your family and friends because water is the ultimate equalizer.

Attendance on both days is required.

Saturday March 18 the course will meet at Bachman Recreation Center  Sunday March 19 at Jackson Point, White Rock Lake Park

INSTRUCTORS

Designed for instructors, outfitters, recreation program managers, trip leaders, and those who want to include people with disabilities in their canoeing and kayaking programs. You will learn how to compensate for a paddlers loss of function due to disability, how to adapt equipment and instruction and how to focus on the paddlers ability. This course includes a classroom and hands on learning, a pool session and open water paddling.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, a person may not be excluded from a program just because they have a disability. Instructors, and others operating programs, are to be prepared to integrate persons with disabilities into their programs.  This American Canoe Association (ACA) course is designed to meet this need and has been taught across the country for the past 16 years. The Red River Division of the American Canoe Association (ACA) and Kayak Power.Com of Dallas are co-sponsoring this course.

This is a certificate course open to all who are interested in integrating persons with disabilities into their paddling programs. You do not have to be a certified canoe or kayak instructor to participate. All ACA certified instructors will receive an Adaptive Paddling Endorsement on all current certifications and ACA certified instructors will receive an update credit upon completion of the entire course.   Thursday is a required skills update session for all.  Attendance at all 4 days is required.
